As the saying goes nature is one song of praise that never stops singing. When you think of the different places to enjoy all the luxury of nature then this park is the haven for you. Lake Mburo located in Kihura in the western part is the smallest of Uganda’s savannah park but it’s a very special place with a variety of species and life. The park is residence to over 69 diverse species of mammals like zebras, impala, buffalos, antelopes, Eland, Bofor and giraffes. The scenery of rolling hills, lakes, swamps and a striking landscape makes Lake Mburo the dream place for every safarier.
When it comes to bird lovers, you will find the swampy valleys of Warikiri, Mirtithe roadsides between Rwoyo camp and the jetty to be the perfect place for spotting birds. This park boasts of over 350 birds and some of these birds include red, yellow and black gonalek, Abyssinian ground hornbill, African fishing eagle and many others. This park is also the only one in Uganda that can boost of having the unique species of bill storks. Who would want to pass out on the opportunity to take memorable pictures of these beautiful birds and to drown in their sweet music all day long?
For safariers that love nature walks, there are walks that can be taken from anywhere around the park with an armed guide at your side. You will enjoy the early morning walks where you encounter hyenas returning to their dens after a night of hunting. At the same time you see hippos returning from grazing during the night. The beautiful hilly terrain walk to the hilltops is one of the best nature walks ever because get to see a panoramic view of the park. There is a safe platform meant for safariers to take photos without disrupting the animals running around. The salt lick situated in the Mitiri valley and the Rubanga forest is also another beautiful sight that will leave you breathless. There is a wooden platform hide away where safariers stand and observe animals licking the salty soil found there.
What makes this park more interesting than the others is the fact that safariers get an opportunity to go on horse riding safaris and intermingle with zebras. Muhingo lodge has a stable and trained staff that take you out on a horse riding safaris around the park. Not forgetting, there are also the bicycles safaris and nocturnal rides that would put a smile on your face. During these nocturnal rides you get a chance to catch a glimpse of night animals like bush babies, porcupines and many others.
Experiencing cultural diversity at this park is an adventure that will challenge your perspective on everyday life. The tour gives an informative insight on the ranches of the Bahima people who herd the famed long horn Ankole cattle, a common sight here. There is also the Ankole cultural community that will take you through their traditional processes of milk chumming, ghee making, local hand crafts and even interesting village walks. The Igongo cultural center is also one historical show place for the Banyakitara that will mesmerize you. The Centre has several traditional grass thatched huts on display and there are guides to explain to you the culture of the natives. This is a great stop off for culture history and tasty traditional foods.
The visit to this park is not complete without a tour to the dazzling Lake Mburo and the other 5 lakes that form part of the wetland system. The feigning swamps hide the secretive papyrus experts such as the red, black and yellow papyrus goalek that you wouldn’t want to miss. For safariers interested in fishing, you get a firsthand experience on a fishing safari on Lake Mburo. Mazinga has been set aside as a chosen fishing spot because it is crocodile and hippo free. The lake has 6 fish species but tilapia is the local favorite. Safariers can do some fishing themselves and later arrange to have the fish prepared at their respective lodges.
